Home | A Couple More Things

So now you have booked off the time and you are ready to take on the adventure.  Here's more information to get you going.

You have the option of being delivered to Haenertsberg by your loved ones and if you would like accommodation for them, it will cost R300 (dinner/bed/breakfast) per night. Please contact us to facilitate.  If you plan to be collected at Crystal Springs, you can also book additional accommodation at R620pp (dinner, bed breakfast).

Please let us know soonest as accommodation is limited.  You will need to be in Haenertsberg by 16:00 on the afternoon before departure.

Alternatively, you can make use of our pre-arranged transport. Space is also limited and is on a first come, first served basis.  A van and bike trailer will leave Midrand (exact position tbc) at 8:30 sharp. It will also collect you from Crystal Springs at 9:30 and return you to Midrand at approximately 13:00.

The cost per person per round trip is R700

Space in the back up vehicle is limited. You may only take one large bag. There are washing facilities along the way and a tip for the service may be required.

The weather can be extreme especially when we cross from Limpopo into the highlands of Mpumalanga. In your daily kit you will need the following:

  • Large Camelback
  • Trail shoes (way more comfy than carbon sole racing shoes)
  • Capacity for 3l of fluid
  • First aid kit (strapping plaster, gauze, antispetic, plasters, space blanket)
  • Lots of insect repellent
  • Additional snacks (lunch is provided by the hosts)
  • Map Board
  • GPS
  • Rain jacket
  • Cell phone (signal is not always available)
  • Water purification drops (in case)
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera and some cash
  • Waterproofing for your kit (ziploc bags or Summit waterproof bags)
  • Sense of adventure

Casual clothing is required for evenings (shorts and t-shirt) plus a warm option of the weather turns cold.  Keep it simple. Your usual cycling kit is required plus helmet of course. We recommend at least 3 sets but if your bag takes more, that's OK. You will need to bring your own spares as well as an ability to do basic running repairs.

Please make sure you are resonably fit. Although this is not a race, you will enjoy it that much more if you can ride the distances comfortably. There are some parts that are very technical so make sure you bring your confidence with you.

Cameras, cell phones etc can be charged overnight.

The thorns are hectic. Tubeless with lots of slime is mandatory. If you ride tubes, you're on your own! Seriously though, thorns as long as your fingers abound and will stab not only your bike but your body too! You must have slime in your wheels one way or another.
